Boda boda operators plying Birongo-Rigoma route took to streets on Sunday accusing Nyamira county government of delaying to repair the road despite remitting taxes to authorities monthly.
The angry operators threatened to boycott paying taxes until the road is repaired and dared tax collectors to intimidate them when going about their daily business.
According to chairman Walter Bundi, many of them were struggling to cater for their young families since they opted to stay at home due to ongoing rains.
“It is quite embarrassing that we are paying our taxes but we are not receiving services from those who are responsible. Many of our members have abandoned the business because of impassible road, making them to struggle while catering for their families. We will not pay henceforth until the road is repaired and we want to warn those responsible for collecting taxes to keep off this region,” he said.
According to him, the group has reportedly written to the county public works department but nothing concrete has yet been done.
“They only did this section but when you go further, the road is impassible. The department of roads and public works has never responded to our concerns even after writing to them severally,” he said.
However, area, MCA who also chairs the roads committee Ben Sironga vindicated the county government and blamed the national government since the road was reportedly under the jurisdiction of the national government.
“The road is under the national government and it's part of Kemera-Rigoma road that is under construction from the upper side (Manga region) they should give the national government time because as area leaders, we have raised the concern to authorities over the delay. But that doesn't rule out their claim to have the road repaired because they are tax compliant,” he said.
