A crackdown is in the offing in Rongai Sub County on unscrupulous boda boda operators who have formed a habit of braking traffic rules at the expense of the residents who fully depend on the sector for transport.

In a meeting between the operators and security agents in Rongai town on Monday, it was agreed that they will adhere to basic traffic rules or risk being locked out of business.

The one motorcycle one passenger rule, having two helmets on board and wearing reflector jackets were among the rules commonly assumed by the operators in their day to day activities.

Speaking at the meeting, Rongai OCPD Richard Masinde cautioned any operator who ignores that directive saying that punitive measures will be taken against them.

“It’s like we have become too lenient on some of you to the extent of you going on with your business as if there is no law to govern you. This is like a double aged sword where you do your work as we do ours in accordance with the law,” he said.

This directive is aimed at taming the rising number of boda boda accidents in the area with the police insisting that the trend can be stopped only if the operators learned to adhere to traffic rules.

Masinde further cautioned police officers who are fond of taking bribes saying that the phenomenon was encouraging the operators to engage in unwanted behavior while on the road.

He vowed to mount a major crackdown in a week’s time so as to retain sanity on all major roads in the area and end the accident menace.

Careless driving, drunken driving, driving without a valid license, overloading, over speeding are among the traffic rules commonly ignored by boda boda operators that in turn endanger the lives of other road users.
