Boda boda operators from Kisii County should make savings from the little they earn as a way of determining their future, area Governor James Ongwae has said.
Speaking on Sunday during a boda boda tournament held at Kisii stadium, Ongwae challenged the operators to join Saccos and banks which could help them make savings to improve their livelihoods.
Ongwae said the savings would help them educate their children in future, apart from enabling them to engage in other investments which will supplement their daily work.
“I want to, first of all, thank you for the good work you’ve been doing. I want to challenge you to make savings with banks and Sacco’s so that it helps you people to educate your children and also in engaging in other investment opportunities apart from the work you do daily,” he said.
Ongwae said his government had renovated a number of roads since 2013 and promised to ensure that roads that have not been renovated are done before the end of its first tenure in office.
“I understand that you may not be able to make enough money for savings if we have poorly maintained roads but many of you can bare me witness that I have done a number of roads since 2013. The county government is also on the process of ensuring the remaining roads are done before 2017,” he added.
He urged operators who were persistently linked with robbery with violence to respect the rule of law and surrender before they are dealt with by the police.
“All I want to see is people investing throw savings they made. We must shun those supporting criminals around and I know police are doing their best to ensure we are working in a conducive environment,” he added.
