The Bunge Mashinani initiative by the Nyamira County assembly wrapped up on Tuesday in style at Nyamaiya Sports Ground, with county speaker labelling it ‘a success’, as the MCA vehemently defended their oversight roles following tough questions from a section of residents.

A section of residents had accused MCAs of sleeping on their jobs, and directly blamed them on persistent corruption claims reported in the executive wing of government in Nyamira.

“The views of the majority Mr Speaker sir is that MCAs are not doing the oversight role well. They have absconded their duty and left the county losing millions through corrupt deals. We all remember the Sh7 million gate, skewed tendering and many more. We are losing trust in them,” said Elijah Ongaki.

However, majority leader Laban Masira, who also represents Nyamaiya in the county assembly, said the assembly had done its best in ensuring the public resources were put into proper use, and vindicated the assembly from fierce criticism.

“We understand our roles well, and the oversight role no doubt that we have done it properly. We have investigated a couple of alleged corruption and even recommended. Some of those found culpable were suspended while others are in court to defend them and that is democracy,” he said.

Bogichora’s Buttah Omanga said the assembly had done extremely well, but blamed the executive of delaying in implementing certain projects that had been approved by the assembly.

“In fact, on representation, we have done also well. It’s only that the executive sometimes delays in implementing some projects,” he added.

Speaker Joash Nyamoko said the Bunge Mashinani initiative had achieved its objectives and hailed residents for showing up to contribute to matters governance.

“I think it was a success. We will schedule again next year to have such meetings. They are important because we speak to residents directly,” he said.
