Residents of Chulaimbo in Kisumu County have been urged to go for cancer screening as early detection is the best way to cure the deadly disease.

Speaking to this writer on the sidelines of a cancer sensitisation exercise, Umoja Cancer Society Management director Anne Ogolla said late detection of cancer is more deadly compared to early detection.

“We are trying to ensure that our people have all the information regarding this killer disease that is claiming many lives. And the best tool we can use to fight it is early detection. That is what we are urging everybody to do,” said Ogolla.

The director said ignorance among people is what leads to many deaths that could have been prevented.

“The cases of ignorance among our people come up often. Some think that cancer is for other people and not us yet the disease does not segregate whom it attacks,” she added.

Residents of Chulaimbo on the other hand praised Ogolla and her team for equipping them with information on cancer.

“We have learnt so many things about cancer that we probably had no idea about, if everybody is aware, then cancer will be a thing of the past," said the the participants.

They were also educated on ways of preventing the disease and challenged the government to make cancer treatment accessible
