Agricultural-based co-operative societies in Kisii County have been challenged to diversify their activities with emphasis on greenhouse technologies as part of the efforts of adding value to their investments.
County Commissioner of Co-operatives Vincent Kenyariri has tipped the management of co-operative societies in the region on the importance of tapping into the potential and opportunities of new farming technologies to maximise members' returns and reduce poverty in society.
Speaking to this writer in Kisii town on Wednesday evening, Kenyariri expressed concern that majority of the co-operatives in the region shunned new farming technologies and found it difficult to compete favourably in the fast changing market economy.
Kenyariri said having co-operative societies diversify their activities will not only maximise their members' investment returns but will also assist in lowering operational costs which overburden members.
"I am encouraging managements of co-operative societies in this region to consider diversifying their activities as part of the efforts to realize alternative income to supplement the one from their core activities instead of relying on one activity which in some cases,"stated Kenyariri.
