A traffic commandant in Gatundu North has urged motorists to strictly observe traffic regulations to curb the rising cases of accidents.

Moses Mwau spoke Tuesday morning after an accident that claimed two lives and injured several people in Gituamba town happened on Monday night.

The accident involved a Gituamba 14 sitter bound matatu, which burst its front tyre before losing control and veering off the road, hitting a tree near Karuri Primary School.

One passenger died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Gituamba Dispensary.

According to an eye witness, the matatu belonging to Mataara Sacco was speeding and the driver lost control when it burst its tyre.

Mwau said the accidents were largely caused by failure of the operators to observe the highway code and warned the motorists against flouting traffic laws.

"We yesterday (Monday) night witnessed two lives lost in a Gituamba town near Karuri Primary School where one died on the spot as another mother died as she was receiving first aid at Gituamba Dispensary," confirmed Mwau.

He said police were already mobilised to enforce traffic rules but observed that the war on road carnage would only be won through concerted efforts among road users and members of the public.
