Gatundu North Sub-County commissioner Daniel Nyamiti has asked day school teachers to thoroughly screen students for alcohol and drugs on a daily basis to curb drug abuse among students.

Speaking in his office on Monday, Nyamiti asked teachers to remain vigilant, since students have devised new ways of sneaking drugs into learning institutions.

‘We have received three cases of students being found with drugs in school. I think teachers on duty are not monitoring their students' behaviours keenly,” said Nyamiti.

He added, “I direct chiefs and their assistants to implement law and order by arresting peddlers and reporting drug users to the police. Parents should also be in the forefront in the fight against drugs among their children by not only punishing them, but also holding counseling sessions with them,” he added.

The commissioner said that chiefs had been issued with enough motorbikes to enable them access all areas in the sub-county.

He also urged the media to help in campaigning against drug abuse especially among children.

“Misuse of drugs does not only happen in day secondary schools. Boarding and university students are among the most notorious students and should be sensitised on the negative impact of abusing drugs,” he said.

He asked drug control agents to launch an integrated programme that will ensure drug abuse is curbed in all learning institutions, and urged teachers to support any initiative that would be brought forth.
