Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma has announced that new Early Childhood Development Education classrooms will be established in all the 35 wards.
Ranguma said the county government has completed construction of 96 ECDE classrooms while construction of 20 more is underway in all the seven sub counties.
The governor said last year, they recruited 770 ECDE assistants to ensure all children obtain basic education.
Speaking on Wednesday at Tom Mboya Labour College when he unveiled a scholarship programme for 210 bright but needy students, Ranguma said his government had allocated Sh8 million for ECDE feeding programme.
He announced that the feeding programme is set to be rolled out in the course of this year and another Sh7 million for ECDE teaching and writing materials.
“Our children who are attending ECDE will be given free food while at school to encourage retention of children in shool,” he said.
Ranguma said plans were also underway to purchase learning equipment for the youth polytechnics in the region and Sh7 million has been earmarked for the initiative.
He further said that last year, he unveiled reconstruction of five model primary schools that benefited from the Sh400 million French funded Kisumu Urban project.
The schools included Angira in East Kajulu Ward, Thim Bonde in Kisumu North Ward, Got Nyabondo in West Kajulu Ward, Rota in South West Kisumu Ward and Rweya in Kolwa East Ward.
