Siaya Senator James Orengo has announced that the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) has put in place a strong legal team to defend Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
Orengo said the team has been meeting to deliberate over the matter before they meet the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The commission may decide to strike off Wetangula’s name from the voters' register following Supreme Court ruling that found Wetangula guilty of bribery.
Orengo is optimistic that Wetangula will continweue to discharge his duties in the Senate until the expiry of this term.
“We are certain that Wetangula will finish his term and go ahead to contest the 2017 general election,” he said.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Saturday, Orengo said Wetangula’s name will be in the ballot in the 2017 general election.
He said there are no grounds that could bar the minority leader in the Senate from participating in any electoral process.
Orengo announced that as Cord they have widely consulted with various personalities over the fate of Wetangula and found no cause for an alarm.
“We have consulted lawyers and other professionals over the matter and we are convinced that Wetangula’s name will not be struck off the voters register,” he said.
