The county government is set to hire over 1,800 youth across the county to unblock drainage tunnels.
The tunnels will be unblocked to ease the flow of water as rains continue to pound the county.
For a start, the county has hired the first 200 youth who began work on Tuesday as they unblocked Prison-Storm bridge which has been over flowing.
Speaking on Tuesday when he launched the work, Governor James Ongwae said most areas within the town including Daraja Mbili bridge, Kisii Mattresses opposite St Judes, Falcon-Umoja centre, Jogoo, Soko Mjinga in Nyanchwa, Bochura, Dermrk petrol station, Mwembe, Daraja Moja and Nyamataro often experience floods.
“The youth are drawn from all our 45 wards and the exercise is extending to all the wards to ensure that the county is free of flooding," he said.
"So far, I am impressed with the work our youth are doing to ensure that we do not have problems draining rain water."
The event was attended by Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, County Executive Committee members Moses Onderi (Lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development), Sarah Omache (Health Services ), Chief Officers Alice Nyariki, Patrick Lumumba and Zablon Ongori, Director, Town Management Beatrice Ochoki among other officials.
Ongwae said the youth will be assigned to unblock the culverts, open blocked trenches, collect garbage, clean highly degraded areas, slash overgrown vegetarian along the roadside, remove silt and mud flows on the road, make trenches and create waterways, clean markets and unblock bridges.
