Officials from the county government of Nyamira entitled to official vehicles have been warned against fuel wastage by area Governor John Nyagarama.

Nyagarama who had summoned senior officials to his office on Tuesday warned them against residing outside their area of jurisdiction, saying the county was losing millions of taxpayers’ shillings in fuelling vehicles for officials who were living outside the county.

He said the officials will henceforth be required to move outside the county only during the transaction of official duties.

“I have said this again and again that all county officials should reside within the county as we are losing millions of shillings fueling vehicles for officials who reside outside the county and that is unacceptable. The vehicle will only be allowed outside the county when officials are transacting official businesses,” he said.

He said officials who were not willing to relocate to the county would only be allowed to use their private vehicles and warned of undisclosed consequences for those who may violate the directive.

“We have to support reduction of public spending and that is important for our growth. We are not forcing you to reside in the county but if you still can’t move to the county, it’s advisable you use your own vehicle failure to which my government will take an action,” he added.

Many of the county government workers from Nyamira are said to be residing in the neighboring Kisii County, a move that had initially led to an uproar from a section of members of the public.
