Gatundu North sub-county agricultural officer Joel Kariuki has disclosed plans by the county government of Kiambu to help farmers establish farm water pans to enhance food productivity.
Kariuki who was speaking from his office in Kamwangi on Tuesday noted that the county will only offer technical and moral support in the establishment as farmers will be left to facilitate the resource aspect part of it.
"These projects will be initiated in high potential areas like Mataara, Kamwangi of course, Gakoe, Mangu and Githobokoni but will be spread in all the wards within the sub-county," Kariuki said.
"Water storage is a crucial aspect in farming and with the commitment of Kabogo, the county is ready to ensure most of the household’s water storage ponds both domestic and sunny weather irrigation purposes. This will help the county have food security," he added.
Kariuki observed that the county had for a very long period relied on piped water either from rivers or other farmers initiated sources adding that the county wanted to equalize all farmers by reducing the lack of water problem forever.
He urged residents to embrace high-value crops that can thrive in the county’s climatic condition.
"Farmers should also consider farming crops that can survive January weather condition in the sub-county like Watermelons, Oranges and avocados which have strong surviving mechanisms," he added.
He further encouraged farmers to embrace new farming technologies for increased production.
