Released convicts in Nakuru County are set to be rehabilitated and properly reintegrated following a proposed partnership programme between Power of Mercy Advisory Committee and the county government.
Speaking on Tuesday when he hosted the committee, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua welcomed the partnership saying the move is a constitutional issue that touches on the furtherance of human rights.
Mbugua also said the county is happy to be enjoined in the process, adding that efforts will be made to see ex-convicts are embraced in society. He lauded the national government for using constitutional institutions such as the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee in engaging such matters.
‘Strong institutions are important especially those that implement the constitution. We shall work with POMAC because now we are enjoined. I also urge this committee to engage with the Council of Governors,’ said Mbugua.
The committee whose role is to receive and review petitions from deserving criminal offenders and make appropriate recommendations to the president was led by the vice chair Regina Saira Boisabi.
On her part, Ms Boisabi said that counties, through sensitization and awareness are well placed to see that these people do not get stigmatized after their release.
‘We also want to partner with counties to see that released convicts who have gone through training and have acquired skills are also given opportunities to work and fend for themselves,’ she said. The committee is on a counties tour on an awareness mission of its mission and vision.
