Kisumu residents are set to have one of the biggest modern markets in East Africa after the county government kick started an ambitious Sh350 million project to transform the famous Kibuye market into a modern one.

The transformation which will be under the Kisumu Urban Project (KUP) will see the market accommodate more than 6,000 traders of any kind from groceries, second-hand clothes, carpentry, retail shops, and tailor shops among others.

According to Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, this will be a market of its kind and is set to change the economic climate of Kisumu and its environs.

He said that the market will not only have slabs and permanent stalls or sheds, but also disability features, children’s nursery, modern sanitary facilities and curio shops.

Ranguma said that all trades currently being undertaken by the Kibuye traders will be accommodated inside the modern facility.

“Kisumu residents must now be ready to have themselves up their game as far as display and modern wholesale and retail is concerned,” said Ranguma.

He added that the shops will be loanable since they will have physical trading shops and kiosks.

The county government has planned renovations in many other markets including Kowino, Ahero, Mamboleo and many others which will be used to accommodate all the traders who were evicted form Oile market.
