Uasin Gishu County government will pass a legislation to ensure vegetables and fruits sold in markets meet the required standards to reduce cancer prevalence.
Speaking on Tuesday in Eldoret, deputy governor Daniel Chemno said this will ensure that residents get fruits and vegetables of high quality and free from chemicals which are the main cause of cancer.
"We have discovered that after farmers use pesticides on their crops, instead of waiting for seven days for them to harvest they sell them to consumers who take in harmful chemicals," he said.
He said the county government wants to ensure that its residents consume vegetables and fruits that have been examined and found fit for human consumption.
"I also urge supermarket managements to ensure the horticulture crops delivered to them are examined and are fit to be consumed. By doing this, cancer disease prevalence will reduce," he said.
