Pressure is mounting on Nyamira County Public Service Board to expedite recruitment of ECDE teachers to combat acute shortages in centres that were recently set by the county government of Nyamira.

The CPSB announced recruitment of the teachers in August and since then it has not shortlisted successful candidates, raising questions among area residents.

Speaking in his Gesima backyard on Friday, Gesima ward MCA Ken Atuti urged the board to expedite the recruitment and station successful applicants to various centres by January 2016.

He said the process had been delayed making it difficult for children from a number of centres to access early childhood education.

“I do not want to meddle in a function of an independent board but it’s my sincere request that they expedite recruitment of ECDE teachers and station them before January. They have taken unnecessarily longer hence denying many children from accessing the services,” he said.

Atuti also said the additional centers have seen the population of pupils increase substantially, making it difficult for one teacher to handle the situation.

“It’s not just those centers that haven’t received teachers. We have many others with excess children and are in dire need of more manpower. The board should factor all that and deploy teachers as soon as possible,” he added.

Board member Jerusha Momanyi who was in attendance admitted the delay but said they were in final processes to call successful candidates for interviews.

“We had announced 400 vacancies but we also had other areas to conduct interviews especially in health and public administration where we had so many people doing interviews. The teachers will be interviewed soon and there is no need to panic,” he said.
