The county government of Kisii will increase ward development kitty from the current Sh5 million to Sh7 million per ward.
This is aimed at empowering MCAs to carry out development projects at the grassroots.
Governor James Ongwae who was addressing Kisii University graduates on Friday said his government will table the proposal to the County Assembly for approval in 2016/17 budget.
Ongwae said if passed, each of the 45 elected ward representatives will be required to invest in education and infrastructure which were key in his 2013 election manifesto.
“There is still a lot to be done and I am proud that we have some. I therefore proposed to increase the ward development fund to Sh7 million from the current Sh5 million so that our MCAs can be able to deal with serious infrastructural and educational issues and the grassroots,” he said.
According to him, the county government is keen in promoting education given its high demand by locals and insisted that MCAs would use the kitty to award bursaries to needy children by topping up with the Constituency Development Fund and county bursaries.
“I am keen to see education being given the priority despite being under the national government. We want to see our children get bursaries to cater for their education,” he added.
He said the executive will constitute a special audit committee that will ensure the money is properly used by the ward representatives.
“We will however, as a county government, ensure our resources are prudently used and that is why before it’s taken to the assembly for approval, we will constitute at audit committee that will be investigating how the money will be used by MCAs,” he said.
