The Kenya Dairy Board Thika branch on Friday led an operation in Witeithie estate where several litres of milk were impounded from vendors.

Branch Manager Joyce Nyamwathi who led the operation said many vendors whose milk was impounded were unlicensed to carry out the business while others had not met the board's requirements in as far as handling of milk is concerned.

"This operation is meant to bring sanity here in Witeithie because milk vendors have been contravening the board's rules. For example, most of the milk we have impounded was in plastic containers instead of aluminium ones and many vendors were unlicensed," said Nyamwathi.

She also noted that some vendors were selling their milk in unhygienic conditions which she said posed a risk to the consumers.

"Our mandate is to ensure that milk being sold to consumers is clean, healthy and of good quality. Anything outside that is not acceptable to us", she added.

Nyamwathi warned the vendors against resuming to the business before meeting all the requirements saying that they risk arrest and prosecution in a court of law.
