Government hospitals in the county of Kisii are said to be having few kits used to test HIV/AIDS, forcing people who want to undergo the tests to go to private hospitals.

Kisii County Director of Medical Services Dr Geoffrey Ontomu said that lack of the HIV testing kits was due to failure by the national government to supply the kits to the county hospitals, for one month now.

Dr Ontomu who was speaking in his office however, said that they have now been forced to stop the programme that was used as a way of encouraging people to go for HIV testing and instead kept the few remaining HIV testing kits for testing on pregnant women in order to stop the mother to child transmission of the deadly virus.

Dr Ontomu also expressed fears that the level of transmission of the HIV virus in the county was still high and called on the national government to act quickly in sending the kits to the counties.

“The level of HIV transmission in our county currently stands at about 8 per cent and I want to call upon the national government to hasten the process of supplying the kits to the counties,” he said.
