Among the things that make Nakuru known is the fact that it is among the biggest commercial and economic hubs in Kenya and is rated among the top five contributors to the national GDP.
But one thing that many might have forgotten is that nakuru was once rated as the cleanest town in East and Central Africa.
In the 90's Nakuru was at the helm of its growth and investors were flocking the town to pitch tend, this made the town famous and delegations from foreign countries were coming to Nakuru to learn on how to keep their towns clean.
According to Nelius Ng'etich who served as Nakuru's Deputy Mayor in the mid 90's, Nakuru was the cleanest town in those days because the population was still low and the people were responsible in keeping the town clean.
"Nakuru was clean from the streets to the estates and we used to receive people from abroad who came to learn how to keep their towns clean. The major thing that helped us attain that status was the few people in Nakuru by then," said Ng'etich.
"Everybody from the municipal council to the common wananchi were committed to keeping Nakuru clean and that is what made Nakuru the cleanest town in our region," he added.
Ngetich adds that Nakuru lost its status of being the cleanest town in East and Central Africa following the population surge.
"Nakuru lost its glory of being the cleanest place in the region after the number of people shot sharply and people became reluctant to keep their town clean," he said.
The capital city of Rwanda, Kigali overthrew Nakuru in 1995 as the cleanest town in the region and has gone a notch higher to be rated as the cleanest town in Africa.
