Nakuru County Church Forum has called on all elected leaders to stop politicising church issues.
Religious leaders from various denominations in the county said church activities should not be dictated by a few through regulations under the proposed laws.
Addressing the press in Nakuru on Tuesday and led by Bishop Jotham Opicho, the leaders said they are against the requirement for different faiths to keep an updated register of their members.
“The new rules give the Registrar sweeping powers, including the power to invade churches to conduct impromptu audits,” said Opicho.
Chrisco Church Bishop Dan Gitau called on the government to consult widely before implementing the regulations so that they can serve the intended purpose of weeding out rogue preachers.
“We are ready for consultations after we have done the same with our members,” said Gitau.
They, however, applauded President Uhuru Kenyatta for asking the Attorney General Githu Muigai to review the proposals within the Religious Societies Rules 2015, and hold consultations with all stakeholders.
