Unemployment has been a major problem affecting the youths in Machakos county.
A great deal of youths engages in uncouth behavior like crime and drug abuse due to unemployment.
The county government should embrace good strategies to curb youth unemployment;
One way is through setting up sports stadiums in the villages in order to promote sports among the youths. Many youths are talented in different sports but have lacked the resources to nurture their talents.
In an effort to promote sports among the rural youth and curb unemployment, the county should be non-agricultural and should be acquired without any cost. This idea is to provide more sports facilities to the rural youth and help alleviate unemployment and poverty among the youths.
The construction of the sports facilities in the villages will essentially be carried out from state government’s own resources and private players should be kept out of the project.
The county government should, therefore, identify sites for construction of sports complexes in the villages. It is well known that the best talent invariably came from rural areas but lack of facilities and opportunities was the biggest hurdle.
More than 50 percent people in rural areas are not aware of the Rural Sports Programme.
Awareness about rural sports programme as a regular and continuous programme is low even after years of implementation of the programme.
About a third among those who have taken part in the rural sports events are not aware of it. Therefore the county government should up its game and help prevent youth unemployment.
