Thika West Environment Officer Janet Kanini wants a vibrant debate on the effective disposal of polythene materials in Kiambu County started.

Kanini speaking in her Thika town office on Tuesday, said the manner in which polythene materials are disposed in the county pose a huge environmental risk to the current and future generations.

"As world leaders convene in Paris,France to discuss matters pertaining global warming, we as Kiambu County residents should also be planning on how to have our own local debate about the disposal of polythene materials," said Kanini.

She added: "If there is one thing that the county and the national governments need to address; it is how we dispose polythene materials and they environmental degradation they have brought about so far."

Kanini also welcomed the increase of excise duty on polythene bags that took effect beginning Tuesday saying it is a positive step towards discouraging their usage.

"In Thika Town alone we have thousands of tonnes of non-biodegradeable wastes lying in our main dumpsites much of which is polythene. Taxation that discourages their use is highly welcome", she said.

She noted that Rwanda has been able to reduce the problem of polythene bags saying that the county and the country as whole can borrow a leaf from the East African nation.
