The Energy Regulatory Commission is now working in collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority and the Kenya National Highways Authority to crack down on illegal activities in the petroleum sector.

ERC director general Eng Joe Ng’ang’a  said the collaboration has been forged to ensure that all bulk petroleum tankers plying the highways are licensed, and that all drivers have valid permits.

He added that the commission will keep track of drivers issued with permits to ensure that they do not perpetuate illicit activities.

He also cited a recent case that was reported last week where an illegal petrol depot in Nakuru’s industrial zone caught fire among others similar cases saying they have prompted the commission to take deliberate steps in cracking down on illegal activities in the petroleum sector.

In regard to the Nakuru incident, the director general stated that ERC managed to get crucial details from the site, including the electricity meter number and is currently in the process of establishing the customer whom the meter was registered for purposes of taking legal action.

On the other hand, he has stated that ERC is also working with other government agencies such as the police to eliminate illegal petroleum activities in the country.

Ng'ang'a spoke during the opening the Nakuru sensitisation workshop for petroleum, renewable and electricity sub-sectors on Wednesday at Merica Hotel.
