An Ethiopian national was on Thursday jailed for one and half years after being found guilty of being in the country illegally.
Monisha Gakebede who was arrested in Kisumu on February 15, pleaded guilty to the charges of being in the country without a valid passport.
According to the prosecution, the accused person was in the country illegally two years ago but later deported after he was nabbed giving false information to immigration officers in the pretex of getting a Kenyan Identity Card.
Kabede however, told Kisumu Senior Magistrate Catherine Owino that circumstances back in his home country were not bearable hence the move to Kisumu.
"There are no jobs in my country and a friend advised me to try my luck in Kisumu. After settling down is when I was planning to get my documents in order," said Kabede.
He asked the court to be lenient as he was willing to get the necessary documentation.
However, Ms Owino said it was a big offence for one to enter a foreign land without permission under any circumstances.
Owino said that after serving his term in prison, Kabede will be deported back to his country.
