Nakuru County is increasingly becoming a hotbed of cyber crime, an internet security expert has warned.
Robert Mwangi, a Nakuru based internet security expert on Thursday warned that should the trend not be monitored, then many individuals, firms and banks in the county would easily fall prey.
He added that the county was becoming a haven for online criminals because of its development pace and investment hub which attract the criminals.
"Cyber crime is a reality in Nakuru and many financial and business organisations in the county are likely to fall victims because they have failed to put the right checks in place and have very insecure systems. If they continue to operate in such a way then the trend is likely to even get worse,” he said.
Mwangi added that unauthorised access to personal information commonly known as hacking, and business espionage, had become even more improvised, with criminals taking advantage of emerging computer software to achieve this.
He warned that individuals who have a tendency to exposing their encryption codes or revealing identities in online platforms or to crafty mails stood a greater risk of being accessed by cyber criminals.
He further advised firms to undertake both internal and external security analysis to avoid falling victims to the criminals and recommended the deployment of computer literate individuals to help fight the menace.
Security analysts recently warned that several firms in Kenya were not prepared for any online security eventualities adding that of these banking institutions ranked the most targeted.
