Matatu Owners Association Chairman in Kamwangi Mr Leonard Kiringu has urged Matatu owners to extend the effect of fuel price reduction to passengers.

Kiringu who spoke to a section of drivers and conductors in Kamwangi town on Monday urged them to consider lowering their travel prices for the good of the public.

"Let us not take advantage of reduced fuel prices to charge our customers similar amounts of fare, it's fair if we also extend the effect to the public," he said.

His sentiments come a day after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a drop of fuel prices.

ERC on Sunday, February 14, through a statement said super petrol prices had been reduced by Sh 2.14 per litre, diesel by Sh 8.82 per litre and kerosene by Shs 6.51 per litre with immediate effect.

"In accordance with Section 102(w) of the Energy Act 2006, a person convicted of retailing petroleum products above the maximum levels will be liable to a fine not exceeding Sh1 million, or the withdrawal of their operating licence or both," read the statement.

According to Kiringu, the government has proved to niche the transport instabilities by facilitating a conducive business environment.

He observed that with the continued government efforts of stabilising economic situations, Kenyans will enjoy reduced prices of food stuff, electricity and transport.

He reminded the drivers and conductors to be disciplined while operating on road and adhere to set traffic rules for smooth operations.

"This way, education and medical services will be affordable for all," he said.

Kiringu on another note reminded matatu operators to spare time for voter registration and that voting was their constitutional right.

"A better transport system will be facilitated by stable political moods in our country. We all need to elect a leader who has a vision for this nation. I urge all of you to take advantage of mobile registration of persons to apply for identity cards and later apply for voter registration to elect a leader of your choice," he told the operators.
