A 40-year-old man from Ilumanthi village died on Thursday while extracting stones from a quarry in Kisiiki hills, Mavoloni, Yatta sub county.

Kisiiki sub chief Peter Maingi said the man died after stone boulders collapsed on him as he extracted them.

"The men around this area are fond of working in quarries," he said.

"To many, that is the main source of income and they have no option."

The man's body was taken to the Mwala sub county hospital mortuary.

The deceased was in the company of four other men who were lucky enough to narrowly escape," explained Chief Maingi.

Yatta OCPD, Mr Edward Kipsang said that the hills are currently dangerous because of the heavy rains, not only for working but also for living in.

Mr Kipsang said cases of rocks rolling down the slope, killing people and destroying property have become common in that area and people should avoid the hill slopes as much as possible.
