Farmers in Kangundo sub-county have been warned against storing their maize harvest while still wet to avoid aflatoxin.
Speaking on Monday evening to Farmers in Kangundo town, the area Agricultural officer Benson Kariuki urged farmers to stop harvesting green maize for storage.
"I have seen farmers harvesting their green maize as the rains continue. If the maize is not dried well before storage it will grow fungi that causes aflatoxin hence destruction of all the harvest," said Kariuki.
Kariuki further stated that large maize produce in the past has been rejected in the market due to aflatoxin hence large losses to the farmers.
The farmers were also urged to avoid fast selling of their harvests to buyers at throw away prices.
"Some farmers have great harvest but each year they are mislead by cheap buyers. This should not happen as you go back to purchasing the same at higher prices for your meals," added Kariuki.
He noted that aflatoxins are attributed mostly to poor drying techniques adopted by the farmers where the poisonous fungi affect mostly maize, cassava and groundnuts.
