Five students from Nyaronge village who managed to score C+ and above but failed to get direct admission to public universities have a reason to smile after area community come to their rescue.
Nyaronge village community started a program in 2011 that targets students from the village who excel in academics but fails to pursue their education due to financial constraints.
Speaking on Monday during the collection of Sh700,000 that will be channeled to bank accounts of institutions in which the candidates have already secured admission, Community Secretary Abel Nyabuya said the beneficiaries will have their fees paid, with parents and guardians expected to cater for food and other essential needs.
“This is a program that makes our village unique. We encourage our children to work hard because we have no land to partition to them. The amount raised here will go to their fees but parents and guardians will be expected to carter for their personal needs,” he said.
Nyabuya said the community had received additional support from local politicians and well-wishers that would see more students benefit from the program after the official release of 2015 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
“We would like to appreciate our local politicians and well-wishers who have come strongly to support us. I think we have enough money to support more students after 2015 KCSE results are out,” he added.
Ten students who were the inaugural beneficiary of the program will be graduating from different universities around the country in December.
