Four people were on Thursday arraigned before a Kisumu law court facing charges of being in possession of fake Kenyan currency.

The four, Stephen Weluse, Martha Awuor, Paul Owiti and Margaret Cherono denied the charges before Principal magistrate Thomas Obutu for the offence they allegedly committed on January 5, in Riat, Kisumu.

According to the prosecution, the four were arrested with fake currency notes in denominations of Sh1,000 totaling to Sh12,000 which they were using to transact business.

The court was told that the suspects tried to buy a table from a Riat based trader who declined after suspecting the notes were not genuine.

The prosecution alleged that the four moved to an electronic shop to buy a mobile phone, but the owner discovered that the money was not genuine. He tricked them to wait for a while so that he can get the phone.

In the process, he called other members of the public who came and helped in detaining them before police came in.

They were detained at the Riat police post.

They were released on a Sh10,000 cash bail with aa surety of a similar amount after the prosecution failed to block their bail application.

The case will be heard on February 8.
