Residents of Gesero village in Bonchari sub-county have appealed to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to tame the snakes that have been terrorising them in the area. The residents claim that the snakes roam the village from a farm near the forest that is along River Iyabe and are especially targeting children and small animals in the area.

Speaking to this Hivisasa writer, some of the villagers said that they have killed more than 5 snakes so far and that they are currently living in fear because the snakes normally chase them.

One of the residents Charles Makori affirmed that this year alone, they have recorded 4 cases of snake bites and they are now calling for help from the responsible authorities.

“We all can’t live in peace considering the fact that we are all in danger; the snakes are big and we fear for our lives,” said Makori.

Makori added that the only survival tactic they are currently applying is either running way or killing the snake if they are able to.

“The snakes started attacking residents early this year and over months, the attack have increased therefore, if the situation is not dealt with sooner, they will continue increasing in number and cause deaths,” he added.

Upon contacting the office of the Kenya wildlife Bonchari sub county, this writer was able to speak to Charles Bina who is a senior officer who said that the resident had not reported any incidents.

“The residents should not go silent when they are suffering from such dangerous reptiles. We will take an appropriate action to curb the menace,” he said.
