Married women have been advised to apply for their identity cards with their husbands name to ease the succession process in case of husband’s death.
Speaking during the celebration of International Women Day, Nyamira county nominated MCA Naomi Ondieki said that cases, where women have been defrauded of their husband's property by their brothers-in-law, have increased and need to be contained.
She said that when women have their husband’s names it is easy to present a case in court since there is proof of the marriage.
“At times you find that a couple had not married officially and they don't have a marriage certificate," said Ondieki.
"Such a case is very difficult to prove in court when the ID doesn’t contain the husband’s name," she added.
She added that most women have their ID cards with their father’s names, which can be used against their defence in a court of law to indicate that she was never married to the deceased husband.
“We have seen many women suffer once their husbands die and there is a need for them to ensure that they get their names included on their identity cards,” she added.
