The National government and the Nairobi County administration have been asked to oversee waste management programmes introduced in Kibera by the Devolution Ministry.
In a statement sent to media houses on Monday, Nubian Rights Forum (NRF), a lobby group based in the slum championing the rights of the Nubian community, said the government has an obligation to ensure citizens acquire services entitled to them such as a clean environment.
"Waste management programmes introduced by the Devolution Ministry was a relieve to the community as they also created job opportunites for the youth. However, due to stalling of the project, roads in Kibera are currently impassable as a result of heaps of uncollected garbage," read part of the statement signed by NRF chairperson Shaffie Hussein Ali.
Ali called upon the county government to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment in a bid to provide alternative garbage collection services before the slum upgrading programme resumes.
"As the community awaits the NYS services to resume, the Nairobi County government together with the environment ministry should offer garbage collection services to the residents of Kibera who pay taxes to the country," read the statement.
