The national government is set to build a national Technical Training Institute in Seme Sub County at a cost of Sh70 million.

Seme MP Dr James Nyikal said the institution to be supported by Siaya Technical Training Institute as a mentor institution will be put up in Awach.

He said the CDF will contribute Sh10 million while the national government will inject Sh60 million.

Speaking in his constituency last week, Nyikal asked area residents to take advantage of the institution and train on technical skills.

He said most Form Four and standard eight leavers from the area have had to get into odd jobs after failing to secure college or university fees, and that the upcoming institution will be saviour to many.

“These days people go to the universities but the universities train managers. This has affected the technical skills and most firms have to retrain graduates in order to be able to carry out the simple technical jobs,” said the MP.

He added: “Kenya needs technical skills, being a country whose economy largely depend on technical skills. These days even getting someone to fix broken water pipe is a problem, because nobody trains on these. At the university people are trained to design, but implementation bid is gained from the technical institutions.”

Nyikal said he would propose to have harmonious syllabus to ensure that highly technical courses are offered in the upcoming institution, while less technical skills are handled by the village polytechnics in the area.
