The government is set to establish mobile container clinics, so as to ease access to health care, which has been hindered by lack of title deeds to establish health centres in slum area.
Speaking during the opening of a week-long Health Ministry’s senior staff retreat in Mombasa, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr Cleopa Mailu said that the slum upgrading programme by the government will see such areas have better health care services.
"It is difficult to provide health care services in slum areas as one can not construct permanent structures due to land issues. However, we shall be putting up containerised clinics to aid in this," Said Dr Mailu.
The CS added that the clinics will have air conditioning units and will be equipped with the latest technology, to enable women to deliver in the facilities.
The Ministry of health is expected to increase health insurance coverage from the current 20 per cent to at least 60 to 70 per cent in the next five years, as a bold move towards universal health coverage.
The move is expected to benefit low income earners who can not afford insurance.
