The government has been urged to introduce school feeding program for children living with disabilities.
According to Ms Rose Kisina, the headteacher of Menengai Primary school which caters for the visually impaired, some of the children living with disability cannot afford lunch and end up spending days without food.
Kisina pointed out that many of the children cannot rush home for lunch due to their disability.
“It's too hectic to ensure that they go and come back for the afternoon classes. It will take them too long and leave them exhausted hence lose concentration in class,” said Kisina
She also appealed to well wishers to helpconstruct toilets in the school for the disabled, saying most of the toilets were constructed for blind students.
“The fact that we also have a water issue makes it hard to ensure that the toilets are ever clean and the blind students are often trapped in the murk,” she added.
School uniforms and writing materials are a problem to many students.
Martin Njoroge, who teaches deaf students, said there is need to review their curriculum.
“We need new and better ideas into how we can simplify education for the deaf and make it more interesting,” Njoroge said.
Njoroge challenged the government to hire new teachers for special schools, saying available teachers are not enough.
