Dr Elias Melly of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has urged the national government through the Ministry of Health to subsidise drugs used by cancer patients since majority cannot afford them.
Speaking during the World Cancer Day at Eldoret District Hospital on Thursday, Melly said that drugs used by cancer patients are very expensive and can only be afforded by the rich.
"They cannot afford the drugs and the processes of treating cancer through chemotherapy which is very expensive since one needs over Sh20,000 per month," he said.
He said the National Assembly should pass a legislation that will ensure cancer patients get subsidised drugs and improved facilities since cancer is a killer disease and if nothing is done more lives will be lost.
"As it stands now, 38,000 new cancer cases are reported and we lose 27,000 Kenyans to cancer, this shows how the disease is very serious and preventive measures need to be put in place," he said.
