Machakos County Governor Dr Alfred Mutua has said he will put into use the Sh300 million set aside for El Nino to avert any probable disaster.
In a statement read on his behalf by his press secretary at a conference in Machakos town, Mutua expressed concerns over the effects of the heavy rains saying he is working round the clock to create strategies that will ensure people of Machakos people are safe.
Mutua stated that Machakos County Government had appointed a special committee to specifically handle any havoc caused by the floods which may include destruction of property, outbreak of waterborne diseases and prevention of aflatoxins on cereals, caused by dampness in storages.
He said the ‘El Nino fund’ is still in place noting that he will not hesitate to put it into use in order to ensure safety of the county residents.
Governor Mutua urged Machakos residents to report any emergencies to their chiefs or conduct 999, a toll-free emergency line which is open any time.
The governor also advised those living on slopes and near flood-prone areas to vacate to safer grounds to avoid any further tragedies.
