Guardians of children and other people who have disabilities in Kibera have asked the national government to include them in Uwezo Fund.
The guardians said they go through many challenges while taking care of these people and no one pays or honours their efforts.
Benson Kyuma who brought up the idea said the guardians should be compensated by the government.
“These guardians have had a challenge in life. They struggle with the disabled and their efforts are not recognised by any person in society. I think the government should also give them some credit or include them among the people to benefit from the Fund," he said on Wednesday.
Uwezo Fund is a Jubilee government initiative aimed at financially empowering marginalized groups namely women, youth and the disabled.
“Can you imagine taking care of a person who is deaf and dumb yet you have never learnt any sign language? This is how difficult it is. Also, some of these guardians are very old and have no jobs to feed them. They hustle a lot to help the disabled live a better life in society. It is our plea that the government should heed our plea,” said Kyuma.
