Nakuru County public health and sanitation department has made true its threat of closing down food kiosks, eateries and hotels that have not adhered to the basic health operating standards in Nakuru County.
Wednesday, officers from the department of health led by Chief Officer Samuel King'ori raided Kikopey Trading Centre, a famous one stop point where travelers divert to have fresh 'nyama choma' along the Nakuru-Naivasha highway and closed down several shops found operating without legal documents.
This comes after several cases of cholera were reported in different parts in the county but the health department remained adamant that everything is under control.
"We are concerned about the health of all of us and wont rest until these business operators adhere to basic health operating conditions to avert spread of diseases," he said.
King'ori noted that the the closed businesses were found to be having dirty kitchens and were operating under unhealthy operating conditions.
"Some even had no latrines and it beats logic how such businesses acquired licenses in the first place," the health expert noted.
He threatened to ensure that ignorant operators who ignore efforts the county government was employing to have a health society are barred from engaging in business by revoking their licenses arguing that such traders were not concerned about their customer's safety.
More than 10 open air hotels, food joints and several eateries were closed down during the operation.
