A slaughterhouse owner was on Tuesday arrested by public health officers for allegedly slaughtering 8 cows at his premises in Zambezi, Kikuyu sub county at night without a permit. This comes a week after a butcher was arrested for selling uninspected meat which the residents admitted after eating the meat in ondiri, Kikuyu sub county.
The Kikuyu sub county deputy public health officer Ms. Alice Kinuthia said that they received the information from residents who complained of the activity that was distracting their night. She said that immediate action was taken and the public health officers accompanied by police officers ambushed the premises and arrested the man. She said that they were able to note that 8 cows had been slaughtered and that they were already packed ready to be delivered to different butchers in the region.
She confirmed that the suspect didn't have a permit to conduct the business of slaughtering or even supplying the meat. The officer said that according to the reports gathered, the man has been operating the illegal business since June this year and has never been arrested since he conducts the business of slaughtering at night.
"I want to thank members of the public for their contribution that has led to the arrest of the suspect. We have been conducting inspections in butcheries in the region over uninspected meat and we suspect that he has been the supplier of such meat," said Kinuthia.
She however warned residents against eating minced meat, sausages and mutura sold in the streets as the meat could be from uninspected animals and therefore a health risk.
