The Higher Education Loans Board whose mandate is to finance higher education to Kenyans is in the process of rolling out a smart card to its users.

According to a post on their tweeter handle reads, "(Today -Tuesday- at 2.00 pm we Launch HELB Smart cards at Cuck - Main Campus, Karen."

This is meant to revolutionise its operations that has faced challenges over the past years.

Among other benefits include, students will be able to verify instantly they have received their loan.

Also, the student will be able to track their expenditure through the customer portal.

The card aims to improve efficiency in the tut ion payment process, as the student will pay their tuition fees directly at the cashier's office, as opposed to the current method whereby the amount are allocated to the individual student account manually.

The move will also go a long way at eliminating manual allocation of tuition fees as well as doubling up as a student ID card.

Already universities such as St Paul’s University Nakuru campus has introduced the smart card system which is in partnership with National Bank.

This is a similar move that is taking shape in the education sector as student cards are now transformed into smart cards.
