Nyamira women representative has urged National Government Administration Officers (Ngao) to help fight violence against women in the region.

Alice Chae who was addressing residents of Ritibo in Kitutu Masaba on Sunday said perpetrators of violence against women in the region went unpunished due to lack commitment from the chiefs, their assistants and deputy county commissioners.

She said many women were suffering in silence with persistent attacks from their male counterparts and also called for expeditious enquiry into sexual harassment of minors in the region.

“We have to accept that things have changed and the same way we treated women in 90s is not the case nowadays. I have heard of a number of domestic violence in our area and sexual harassment of our girls. These cases have gone unpunished with the perpetrators using local; administrators to shield themselves,” she said.

She warned the administrators against being used by the perpetrators to cover their crime and promised to work with all stakeholders to seek justice for women.

“A woman is an indispensable figure in the society so it’s really disappointing that many of us are still subjected to domestic and sexual violence. Chiefs and assistants have an obligation of arresting those responsible, but I am shocked that some are used to block justice. I will work hard to ensure our women get justice,” she said.

She said the administrators were closer to people and would help the government combat the crime before it escalated.

“It is my challenge to chiefs and their assistants to work without fear or favour and bring those responsible to justice. It is their prime responsibility and I hope as we work together, this primitive behavior from some men will some day be a thing of the past,” she said.
