Two hundred and fifty youth got the chance of serving the country in the capacity of forest rangers after successfully undergoing a recruitment exercise that was held at the National Youth Service Training College in Gilgil sub-county on Thursday.

The exercise brought together more than 4, 000 youths from all the 47 counties, with each county being allocated five slots.

Activities were rife at the densely populated Gilgil town centre from as early as Tuesday with all restaurants and lodgings being fully booked by midday Wednesday.

Speaking when he officially launched the recruitment at the NYS grounds, Samuel Mugere, a senior officer from KFS committed to overseeing an independent, free and fair recruitment exercise but expressed concern over the huge turnout.

"The turnout is enormous, we never expected such a crowd but all in all, we will stick by the law and ensure that only the best qualified are selected," he said. The selected recruits immediately proceeded for a six month training at the Kenya Forest Service Training College.
