Nyamira County has been boosted after a UK based philanthropic group donated Sh10 million to help fight jiggers.
Sir John Lee Man Foundation which also supports education across Africa and other continents agreed to donate the money to Hope Group which has been spearheading anti-jigger campaign in the region.
Speaking during the announcement of the funding on Tuesday, the Foundation's Deputy Group Manager Thomas Mac Lean said the foundation had been touched with the difficulties many children from the region infested by jiggers were undergoing.
“We have been in contact with Hope Group and we know the kind of activities hey has been doing. We are aware that many school going children have dropped because of the jigger menace and as a foundation we have settled on Sh10 million to help the Hope Group try to reach as many victims as possible,” he said.
Mac Lean said the foundation was looking forward to develop a partnership with the group as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities in Africa.
“We are keen in supporting education and that is why we want children to stick in school. We will in future form a partnership with Hope Group to mane the funding an annual activity,” he added.
Group’s chairman Peter Mokweri hailed the foundation for its efforts to improve education in the continent.
“Sir John Lee Man Foundation is synonymous in supporting education in Africa. When I approached them about supporting us to combat jigger menace that affects school going children, I had no doubt that that they will support us,” he said.
