Thika Level 5 Hospital Medical Superintendent Andrew Toro has announced that the hospital has recorded zero maternal deaths for the past five months.

The 74-year-old medical facility that receives over 1,000 patients daily credits this milestone to improved and internationally benchmarked medical standards that are incorporated in the day to day running of the hospital.

Toro said that it has been achieved due to timely service delivery for expectant mothers by the hospital staff and manageable workloads.

"The steep decline in pre-natal deaths sounds volumes on the aggressive medical campaigns mounted by the hospital staff to create awareness among the general population on the importance of expectant mothers visiting the hospital for regular check-ups," said Toro.

Speaking on Monday, Toro said despite the increase in numbers of new patients seen at the medical facility by 40, 000, the hospital would scale up its apprenticeship programmes to continue imparting new skills to staff through in-house training.

“Some 46 medical doctors from the county had received scholarships for their masters degree programmes in a bid geared towards increasing expertise to ensure specialised skilled manpower is availed in the county,” he added.

Toro said that those patients who need Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) services can access them at the medical facility without the past referrals to Kenyatta National Hospital.
