Most people love to eat meat.

This craving and liking of meat in this hard economic times has also led people to devise ways to ensure they have ‘meat’ on their tables. People have resorted to eating weird animal body parts and quench their craving.

The meats that are top on peoples menu include cow and goat heads, legs, offal that include intestines and other parts. 

A hotel in Limuru, New Generation, has caught the residents’ eyes by specialising in the sale of these meats.

The hotel owner has taken pride in his assortment of meat dishes by displaying them plainly on the hotel banner for the hotel.

The banner has pictures and names. The hotel sells ‘mutura’, ‘matumbo’, ‘supu’, ‘kichwa ya ngombe’ and kichwa ya ngombe.

The hotel is usually flocked hours before lunch hour, through lunch hour and after lunch hour. The women especially visiting the place for soup while the favourite for the men is the head for cow or goat. “The soup is tasty and rich, and with my aching bones a cupful goes a long way,” said Milkah Wambua.

The number one reason why people prefer these meats is because they are cheap.

Others say it is because the meat is soft. Joel Mwangi, in his 70s has lost most of his teeth but said he loves eating the head, and especially the tongue because it is soft to chew and delicious.

The head usually goes through an elaborate process of preparation that includes ‘roasting’ on open fire to remove the fur and later boil the head to soften the tough meat.

The head has a lot of meat and everything on it is eaten including the years, except the eyes which are removed.
