The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) has decried the rise in quacks that have infiltrated the profession.

ICPAK Nyanza Branch Chairperson Hesbon Omollo said this matter should urgently be dealt with.

Omollo said these ‘fake’ accountants are denying members their source of livelihood and at the same time giving poor services to the business community.

He said ICPAK has already stepped up his surveillance and nabbed quite a number of quacks and disciplinary action is being taken on them.

“I laud the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for introducing tax platform which identifies professional tax consultants and auditors when filling returns," he said adding that the platform has helped in arresting culprits.

During the ICPAK inaugural annual dinner at Acacia hotel that brought together certified accountants from Nyanza Region, the Assistant commissioner of KRA John Orioro said their close relationship with ICPAK has helped them a lot in improving compliance in the region.

Orioro promised to work strictly with professionals confirmed through ICPAK and their own internal registration system.

On counties Omollo noted that ICPAK helps in highlighting challenges and helping counties within Nyanza region by seconding its members to county budgets and economic forums as well as Audit committees of the counties.

He challenged ICPAK members to always be involved more in public matters especially on issues of accountability for public fun.

Already ICPAK has seconded its members to Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay County and will soon do the same for Nyamira, Kisii and Migori counties as part of budget and economic forums to help in anchoring the public finance management act and budget cycle in the counties.
